New controversy on the left: La France Insoumise MP François Piquemal posted a photo on X where he posed, all smiles, alongside rapper Médine, before the latter's concert in Toulouse. "Very happy to welcome Médine to Toulouse (Editor's note: Francois Piquemal is an elected representative in Toulouse) before his concert at the Bikini. An artist committed to all causes of emancipation in our society," wrote the rebellious MP, adding a quote from the singer: "Open-mindedness is not a fractured skull."
Yet behind this innocuous photo lies a heavy past. Médine, often invited by left-wing elected officials and applauded by rebel activists, has a shady reputation. Last March, he lost his case against Minister Aurore Bergé, who had called him an "Islamist rapper" in 2021. The Paris Criminal Court ruled that these comments were not defamatory, noting that the artist had himself distinguished himself with ambiguous lyrics, notably in his song "Don't Laïk," in which he sang: "Let's crucify the secularists like at Golgotha."
Already in 2023, the rapper from Le Havre sparked a heated controversy after a tweet deemed anti-Semitic targeting Rachel Khan, a Jewish essayist and granddaughter of a deportee, whom he called "resKHANpée." Despite the criticism, Médine was warmly welcomed at the LFI and EELV summer conferences, where he spoke at length about his "social and political commitment."
A left still complacent with Islamism?
By posing with Médine, François Piquemal illustrates a closeness between a section of the radical left and figures from the Islamo-leftist movement. A deliberate but risky choice, even though Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his lieutenants are regularly accused of complacency toward religious sectarianism. While Médine claims to "fight against the far right and for social causes," his words continue to divide even within his own camp.
The image of a member of parliament proudly posing with an artist repeatedly accused of anti-Semitism and radical Islamism risks, once again, fueling (rightly) the ambiguity trial brought against LFI.
