OTTAWA — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's new cabinet will be officially sworn in on Tuesday, May 13, the office of Governor General Mary Simon announced Friday. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. local time at Rideau Hall, the official residence of King Charles III's representative in Canada.
The event will mark a new stage in the political transition initiated following the early elections of April 29, won by the Liberal Party. Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and then of the Bank of England, successfully ran his first election campaign, succeeding Justin Trudeau at the head of the Liberal Party and, now, of the Canadian government.
According to the official statement, only the swearing-in of ministers is scheduled for Tuesday, as the Prime Minister has already been sworn in. This clarification corrects an earlier report that Carney himself would be sworn in at the ceremony.
The cabinet formation is eagerly awaited, particularly to see whether Carney will opt for a balance of regional, gender, and parliamentary experience, as is the Canadian tradition. The composition of the government team could also provide insight into the new government's immediate priorities, particularly regarding the economy, the environment, and relations with the provinces.
The swearing-in ceremony will be broadcast live by national media, as is customary, and will officially kick off the executive term of Carney and his team. The inauguration also marks the return of a prime minister with a career in the high echelons of international finance, heading one of the G7 countries.
