Horizons MP Béatrice Bellamy has died at the age of 59 from cancer.

Béatrice Bellamy, the Horizons party member of parliament for the 2nd constituency of Vendée, died on Sunday, May 24, at the age of 59, following a battle with cancer. Her parliamentary team announced her death on Monday, stating that she died surrounded by her loved ones.

A disappearance that has a profound impact on Vendée political life

Elected to parliament for the first time in June 2022, Béatrice Bellamy sat in the National Assembly as part of the Horizons & Independents group. She represented the 2nd constituency of Vendée, which includes the areas of La Roche-sur-Yon, Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, and Chantonnay. Her death followed a worsening of her illness in recent weeks. According to a statement from her staff, the cancer, which had initially remained dormant, had recently resurfaced and progressed rapidly.

An elected official deeply rooted in her territory

Before her arrival at the Palais Bourbon, Béatrice Bellamy was already involved in local affairs. She had notably served on the La Roche-sur-Yon city council and was active in community organizations in the Vendée region. Born on October 20, 1966, in Nantes, she worked as an administrative and sales executive before her parliamentary career. In the National Assembly, she notably served as secretary of the Committee on Cultural Affairs and Education.

A term marked by health, sport and local engagement

Béatrice Bellamy paid particular attention to issues of health, prevention, sports, and community involvement. Her personal and political career was also linked to the fight against cancer: the High Authority for Transparency in Public Life noted her volunteer work on the board of directors of the Vendée branch of the League Against Cancer. Her death prompted numerous reactions within the political sphere. The President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, paid tribute to a committed member of parliament, devoted to her region and her mandate, describing her as a woman of conviction and humanity.

A re-election after the dissolution

Béatrice Bellamy was elected to the National Assembly in 2022 and re-elected in 2024 after the Assembly was dissolved. She was then serving her second term under the Horizons banner, the party founded by Édouard Philippe. Her official parliamentary record also listed her substitute, Dominique Paillat, mayor of Saint-Germain-de-Prinçay. In the event of a member's death, the Electoral Code stipulates that the seat is filled until the next Assembly election by the person elected at the same time for that purpose.
