On an official visit to Mexico, Emmanuel Macron, revisited the spectacular burglary of the Louvre Museum that occurred on October 19th. When questioned by a local media outlet, he confidently asserted: "The jewelry will be recovered, they will be arrested, the burglars will be brought to justice.".
The head of state also mentioned the security of the museum. "Security at the Louvre will be completely redesigned."he stated, specifying that this project is part of a "Grand plan for the reinvention and rebirth of the Louvre" already announced a few months earlier. According to him, this event constitutes "A shock for everyone" which has "An opportunity to emerge even stronger".
A theft estimated at 88 million euros
The robbery has deeply affected the cultural world. Eight pieces of jewelry, valued at an estimated 88 million euros, were stolen from the Apollo Gallery in less than eight minutes. The perpetrators scaled the museum's facade, entered through a window, and opened two display cases using specialized tools.
Security at the Louvre was heavily criticized after the incident, with surveillance and protection measures deemed inadequate to meet current standards. The museum's management implemented additional security measures, including placing sensitive items in secure vaults. Three days after the theft, the Élysée Palace requested that these measures be accelerated to strengthen the museum's security.
To date, several people have been charged and others are still actively being sought. Investigators fear that the jewelry, due to its historical value, could be quickly dismantled to erase all traces, making its recovery more difficult.
