Barely installed as mayor of the capital, Emmanuel Grégoire is facing an explosive situation in after-school programs, marked by a series of reports of assaults against children. The new Socialist mayor has announced his intention to make this issue an immediate priority, with initial decisions expected soon before an extraordinary Paris City Council meeting dedicated to the matter.
During his campaign, he promised a complete overhaul of the system, including massive recruitment of activity leaders and increased transparency. Faced with growing anger from families, associations are now demanding concrete and urgent measures, citing a total loss of trust and a surge in warnings in recent months.
Strong requirements to restore trust
Several groups are calling for the establishment of a clear and centralized system for reporting incidents, as well as strengthened coordination between the city hall, the national education system, and the justice system. Some are also advocating for a comprehensive administrative inquiry and an independent audit of the most affected facilities, where several staff members have already been suspended.
Meanwhile, the municipal opposition is calling for an evaluation of the after-school program's organization. The mayor, for his part, is considering management changes at all levels and holding a citizens' assembly to rethink how the sector operates. The stated objective is to guarantee enhanced supervision of children, in a context where several dozen activity leaders have been dismissed in recent months for serious or alleged misconduct.
