Catherine Trautmann was elected president of the Strasbourg Eurometropolis on Friday, April 10, after securing a majority of votes within the council. Already mayor of the city, she now holds both positions, a return to a situation she experienced more than twenty years ago.
Her nomination was hardly in doubt, as the former minister had already secured a majority with right-wing and centrist elected officials. This alliance, formalized by a governance agreement, guaranteed her a more than sufficient base of votes in the absence of any other declared candidate.
A majority built upstream
Strasbourg's significant presence in the assembly, with more than half the seats, also influenced the outcome of the vote. Other municipalities in the metropolitan area have more limited representation, further strengthening the influence of the Alsatian capital in this election.
Following this, the new president must form her executive team by appointing several vice-presidents responsible for different areas. This team will be tasked with implementing the guidelines set for the upcoming term.
