Frédéric Vasseur hospitalized, Ferrari without its boss in Monaco

A major blow for Ferrari just hours before qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. The Italian team announced this Saturday morning that its managing director, Frédéric Vasseur, would not be present at the Principality circuit due to hospitalization. This unexpected absence comes at a time when the Scuderia is in a particularly favorable position, having delivered a strong performance during free practice.

In a brief statement, Ferrari indicated that the 58-year-old French team principal had undergone medical examinations and would remain under observation at a hospital in Monaco. The team released no further details regarding his condition, citing his privacy. "Fred Vasseur will not be at the circuit today. Following medical examinations, he will remain under observation at a local medical facility. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on track soon," the Italian team stated simply.

Jérôme d'Ambrosio temporarily takes command

In the absence of the Scuderia boss, Jérôme d'Ambrosio will manage the team's operations throughout this crucial day. A former Formula 1 driver and former Mercedes executive, the Belgian has held the position of Ferrari's deputy team principal since 2025. A close collaborator of Frédéric Vasseur, he has an in-depth understanding of the team's structure and should ensure a smooth transition.

This absence comes at a strategic moment in the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. On a circuit where overtaking is extremely rare, qualifying is of paramount importance. Pole position is often the best guarantee of victory on Sunday in the narrow streets of Monte Carlo.

Ferrari in great form before qualifying

Despite this bad news, Ferrari is approaching the day with confidence. On Friday, the two red cars dominated the second free practice session. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of his teammate Charles Leclerc, local hero and winner of the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix.

These performances confirm the progress made by Scuderia Ferrari since the start of the season. After several difficult years, Ferrari has once again emerged as one of the main contenders for victories and world titles. Under the leadership of Frédéric Vasseur, who took over as team principal at the beginning of 2023, the Italian outfit has gradually regained stability and competitiveness.

A major player in Ferrari's revival

A respected figure in the paddock, Frédéric Vasseur has extensive experience in motorsport. Having progressed through the junior categories before leading the Sauber Formula 1 team, he was chosen by Ferrari to succeed Mattia Binotto. His mission was to restructure the Italian manufacturer's sporting organization and bring the Scuderia back to the top.

Since his arrival, Ferrari has made significant technical and sporting progress, regularly returning to the forefront of the field. The arrival of Lewis Hamilton alongside Charles Leclerc has also strengthened the team's ambitions for the coming seasons.

With qualifying in Monaco expected to be particularly competitive, the entire paddock is now hoping for a speedy recovery for the French team principal. Ferrari has not yet given any indication regarding Frédéric Vasseur's potential participation in Sunday's race.
