Paris Saint-Germain began their season with a new trophy. Facing Aston Villa in Salzburg on Wednesday, the Parisian club secured a 2-1 victory in the UEFA Super Cup, thanks to goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué. Brian Madjo had equalized for the English side just before halftime. Having already won the competition in 2025, PSG retained their title and became only the fourth club in history to win two consecutive editions of the UEFA Super Cup.
Kvaratskhelia unlocks the final
Paris quickly took control of the ball and gradually increased the pressure on the English penalty area. In the 20th minute, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia received the ball on the edge of the box. The Georgian cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a powerful shot that beat Marco Bizot at the near post. PSG led 1-0. Aston Villa didn't collapse and, on the contrary, began to pose serious problems for the Parisian defense. Brian Madjo was particularly dangerous. In the 28th minute, the young striker was found a few yards from goal but failed to direct his header on target. In the 41st minute, he again lost his marker from a corner before missing another opportunity.

The English pressure finally paid off in the 45th minute. John McGinn delivered a cross from the right wing, and Brian Madjo got to the ball at the far post. The striker beat his defender and scored with a left-footed sliding finish. Aston Villa leveled the score at 1-1 just before halftime. The end of the first half was difficult for PSG. Aston Villa imposed a higher level of physicality and created numerous dangerous situations. Matvey Safonov was called into action several times to prevent the English side from taking the lead.
Safonov keeps Paris in the game
After the break, Aston Villa continued to press. In the 51st minute, Madjo won a one-on-one against Marquinhos and set up McGinn. The English captain cut inside onto his left foot and unleashed a shot that forced Safonov into a superb save to his right. The Parisian goalkeeper was called into action again a few minutes later. Villa exploited the spaces left by Paris and continued to threaten a defense under pressure. Safonov was equal to the task, keeping PSG level.
Désiré Doué delivers for PSG
Paris finally regained the lead in the 61st minute. Désiré Doué was played through behind the English defense and found himself one-on-one with Bizot. Thinking he was offside, the French international nevertheless continued his run and beat the goalkeeper with a left-footed shot. Matty Cash was covering on the far side: the goal stood. PSG led 2-1. The Parisians then had chances to extend their lead. Ousmane Dembélé drew his opponent into the box after a series of dribbles, but the ball fell to Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian tried to chip the ball over Bizot but failed to hit the target.
Aston Villa pushes to the very end
Aston Villa refused to give up. The English side continued to attack, and Safonov was called upon to make a crucial save from a powerful Hemmings shot. In the 82nd minute, Tammy Abraham accelerated through the middle before laying the ball off to Alysson on the right. Her cross flashed across the entire Paris penalty area without finding a teammate. PSG held on until the final whistle and secured a 2-1 victory. Kvaratskhelia and Doué delivered Paris their first trophy of the season, while Safonov made numerous saves whenever the Parisians were under pressure.
PSG joins Ajax, AC Milan and Real Madrid
This latest success allows PSG to enter an extremely exclusive club. Paris becomes only the fourth club in history to win two consecutive UEFA Super Cup titles . Before them, only three clubs had achieved this feat: Ajax, winners of the 1973 and 1975 editions (no edition was played in 1974), AC Milan, crowned champions in 1989 and 1990, and Real Madrid, winners in 2016 and 2017. Having first won the trophy in 2025 after overturning Tottenham and winning the penalty shootout, PSG retained it a year later. Paris now boasts two UEFA Super Cups in its trophy cabinet, won consecutively in 2025 and 2026.
