With a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday in Salzburg, the Parisian club won the UEFA Super Cup for the second consecutive year and got their 2026-2027 season off to a perfect start. After the match, Marquinhos immediately set the tone: Paris wants to extend this winning streak and keep winning.
Paris strikes again from the outset
Defending champions PSG retained their UEFA Super Cup title after a hard-fought match against the Europa League winners. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute, before Brian Madjo equalized just before halftime. At 17, the Aston Villa striker became the youngest goalscorer in the competition's history. Paris regained the lead after the hour mark thanks to Désiré Doué. Played through behind the English defense, the French international found the back of the net. The goal, initially ruled offside, was ultimately awarded after a VAR review. PSG then held onto their lead until the final whistle, securing a 2-1 victory.
Marquinhos: "We want to remain in football history."
At the final whistle, Marquinhos made no secret of his satisfaction. The Parisian captain emphasized his team's ability to win another trophy despite a shortened preseason for several players. For the Brazilian defender, this latest success confirms the group's undiminished ambition. PSG doesn't intend to rest on its laurels. "We want to remain in football history ," declared Marquinhos, who believes the only way to achieve this is to continue winning every time a trophy is presented to them.
As a reminder, Paris is already coming off two exceptional European seasons. Crowned Champions League winners in 2025 and again in 2026, PSG became in the spring only the second club to retain the Champions League title since the introduction of the current format, after Real Madrid.
PSG joins AC Milan and Real Madrid
With this latest European Super Cup victory, Paris adds another historic achievement to its record. The club becomes only the third team to win the competition two years in a row, after AC Milan in 1989 and 1990 and Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. Ajax also won the 1972 and 1973 editions, but the former was still an unofficial competition.
The story is all the more remarkable given that PSG had never won this competition before 2025. Defeated by Juventus in their first appearance in 1996, Paris secured their first trophy in 2025 against Tottenham, after overcoming a two-goal deficit before winning on penalties. A year later, the Parisians retained their title against Aston Villa.
The 2026-2027 season has already begun.
For Luis Enrique and his players, this new trophy arrived in the very first official match of the season. Despite several international players having their holidays cut short after the World Cup and a limited preseason, Paris picked up exactly where they left off: by winning. And Marquinhos is determined not to see his team slow down. After two Champions League titles and now two consecutive UEFA Super Cups, the Parisian captain has set a simple rule for the future: every opportunity to win another title must be seized to the fullest.
