Champions League – PSG beat Liverpool (2-0). The score could have been much higher.

Paris Saint-Germain delivered a masterclass in control on Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes. With a 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, the capital club took a commanding lead in their quest for qualification thanks to goals from Désiré Doué (11th minute) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (65th minute). Given the flow of the game, the scoreline almost seems flattering to the English side.

Talented Paris launches, Liverpool retreats

Paris Saint-Germain started the match with aggression, intensity, and ball movement that pushed Liverpool back. The first blow came in the 11th minute when Désiré Doué opened the scoring. PSG then took control of the game, establishing technical and territorial dominance that forced the Reds to defend deep, often in crisis mode.

The scenario was clear: Paris attacked, Liverpool buckled. Kvaratskhelia sounded another alarm in the 32nd minute with a shot saved by Mamardashvili. Five minutes later, the Reds' goalkeeper made another save, this time denying Doué, who was found after a through ball. In the 42nd minute, Dembélé was played in after a superb Parisian counter-attack, but his shot lacked sharpness. Just before halftime, João Neves even had a chance to make it 2-0, but his effort went wide. At halftime, Liverpool were already largely outplayed, without having truly troubled Paris.

Paris accelerates even further after the break

Upon returning from the locker room, PSG resumed with the same strategy: press, win the ball back quickly, and strike. In the 53rd minute, Paris once again sliced through the English defense. Kvaratskhelia found Nuno Mendes, whose cutback cross reached Dembélé, unmarked about twelve meters out. The Parisian striker opened his left foot too much and sent the ball over the bar. A huge opportunity to extend their lead went begging. Moments later, Hakimi won the ball high up the pitch, made a run down the wing, but then saw another dangerous situation close down after a defensive recovery by Gomez.

Liverpool, for their part, never managed to turn the tide. Their first real attempt didn't come until the 49th minute, through Ekitike, and the Reds ultimately failed to register a single shot on target. Even when they tried to push forward, Paris maintained control of the match.

Kvaratskhelia illuminates the Park

The second goal came logically in the 65th minute, and it was superb. João Neves slipped a perfect through ball. Kvaratskhelia got behind the defense, held off Gravenberch's challenge, beat Mamardashvili, evaded Gomez, and calmly slotted the ball into the empty net. It was the moment of the match, the one that rewarded PSG's superiority and sent the Parc des Princes into raptures.

Paris even thought they had a penalty a few minutes later when Warren Zaïre-Emery broke into the box and was tackled by Konaté. The referee initially pointed to the penalty spot, before reversing his decision after reviewing the footage, ruling that the Liverpool defender had touched the ball before catching the Parisian's ankle. Even without that third goal, the message was clear: PSG dominated from start to finish.

The only regret: not having already killed the suspense.

This encapsulates the ambivalence of the evening in Paris. PSG delivered a complete performance, neutralized Liverpool, produced numerous high-level sequences, and established a significant lead before the return leg at Anfield. However, they can also acknowledge that they let an even more comfortable victory slip away. With greater efficiency in the penalty area, Paris could likely have wrapped up this two-legged tie in the first leg. Nevertheless, they hold a two-goal advantage heading into the second leg next Tuesday.

It should be noted that in the other match of the evening, Atletico Madrid caused a sensation by winning 2-0 on the pitch of FC Barcelona.
