Bayern Munich defeated Real Madrid 4-3 on Wednesday in a thrilling second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena. Having already won the first leg 2-1 at the Bernabéu, the Bavarians secured their qualification with a 6-4 aggregate score and will face PSG in the semi-finals.
An electrifying start, followed by a breathtaking first half
The match descended into madness from the opening seconds. Arda Güler capitalized on a huge error by Manuel Neuer to open the scoring after just 35 seconds, immediately leveling the aggregate score. Bayern responded almost instantly: Aleksandar Pavlovic equalized in the 6th minute from a corner, restoring the Germans' lead over the two legs.
But Real Madrid refused to back down. Güler scored twice from free kicks in the 29th minute, before Harry Kane equalized in the 38th to make it 2-2. Just before halftime, Kylian Mbappé struck in the 43rd minute, putting Real Madrid back in contention. At the break, the score was 3-2 to Madrid on aggregate, 4-4 on the two legs.
Neuer trembles, then saves Bayern
Long at fault for the opening goal and struggling with Güler's free-kick, Manuel Neuer redeemed himself after the break. In the 54th minute, the German goalkeeper parried a dangerous shot from Mbappé, keeping Bayern in the game at a crucial moment. A few minutes later, Vinicius squandered a golden opportunity from a perfect cross by the Frenchman, just when Real Madrid looked poised to turn the game around.
The second half then became a tug-of-war. Bayern pressed forward, Real threatened on the counter-attack, and every attack seemed capable of deciding the outcome of the qualification.
The Camavinga turning point, then the Bavarian lightning
The game turned on its head in the final minutes. In the 87th minute, Eduardo Camavinga was sent off for a second yellow card after delaying a free-kick throw-in. Real Madrid, already under pressure, crumbled almost immediately. In the 89th minute, Luis Díaz capitalized on the space and saw his deflected shot find the back of the net. Then, in stoppage time, Michael Olise sealed Bayern's qualification with a curling left-footed shot in the 94th minute.
The Allianz Arena explodes, Real Madrid collapses, and Bayern Munich completes a quarter-final second leg of rare intensity.
Mbappé scores, but his European quest fails again
Kylian Mbappé found the back of the net once again, scoring his 15th goal of this Champions League campaign. But it wasn't enough. This elimination prolongs the French striker's wait in his quest for another Champions League title. After seeing his former team, PSG, whom he left hoping to win the Champions League, lift the trophy last season, the French international has nothing left but tears… For the second consecutive year since Kylian Mbappé's departure, PSG has outperformed Mbappé's Real Madrid.
