Bayern Munich secured a 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Luis Díaz opened the scoring in the 41st minute, Harry Kane doubled the lead shortly after the restart, and Kylian Mbappé pulled one back for Real Madrid in the 74th minute. The second leg is scheduled for April 15th in Munich.

Bayern Munich taking control

Bayern Munich started the match with authority and immediately imposed their rhythm. Their pressing disrupted Real Madrid's build-up play, their high recoveries multiplied, and Real were forced back too often. The German club were in complete control, playing with precision and creating the best chances, while Real were mainly focused on surviving in flashes of brilliance.

Luis Díaz rewards Bavarian dominance

The opening goal came in the 41st minute and perfectly summed up the first half. Serge Gnabry combined with Harry Kane, who slipped the ball into the path of Luis Díaz. The Colombian finished first-time past Andriy Lunin. The move was quick, clean, and incisive. The Germans deservedly led 1-0 at halftime.

Kane stuns the Bernabéu crowd after the break.

The turning point of the match came immediately after the restart. Twenty seconds into the second half, Real Madrid lost possession again, and Bayern Munich struck instantly. Aleksandar Pavlović collected the ball, Michael Olise advanced, and then passed to Harry Kane, who curled a shot into the bottom right corner. Lunin got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out. In a matter of seconds, Bayern went from controlling the game to putting on a dominant display and took a two-goal lead at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid wakes up, Neuer holds firm, Mbappé reignites the suspense

Real Madrid, however, didn't disappear from the game. Vinícius missed a golden opportunity on the hour mark, then Manuel Neuer made a crucial save from Mbappé. Under pressure, Bayern sat back slightly, and Madrid finally pressed forward with more consistency. In the 74th minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold combined on the right and sent a ball towards the far post; Mbappé finished it off and reduced the deficit. The Bernabéu erupted, and the end of the match became much more open.

Bayern Munich take an option

Bayern Munich leave with a 2-1 victory and a real chance of qualifying. But Mbappé's goal keeps Real Madrid's hopes alive before the return leg in Germany. In terms of performance, the Bavarians impressed with their intensity, precision, and aggressiveness in winning back possession. As for the outcome, Real Madrid retains a glimmer of hope, promising a highly charged second leg on April 15th in Munich.

It's worth noting that in the other match of the evening, Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory away to Sporting Lisbon, in a rather dull affair. Qualification seems all but guaranteed for the Gunners…
