Ligue 1: Lille qualifies for the Champions League, Auxerre secures its survival, Nice will fight for survival in the playoffs

After a nail-biting final day of Ligue 1 action, Lille secured their place on the podium despite their defeat against Auxerre. Lyon, thrashed by Lens, will have to go through the Champions League playoffs. At the bottom, Auxerre and Le Havre avoided relegation, while Nice will fight for their Ligue 1 survival against Saint-Étienne. The evening was also marred by two pitch invasions, one in Nantes and the other in Nice.

A crazy end to the season

Ligue 1 concluded its season amidst noise, tension, and dramatic twists. On Sunday evening, Matchday 34 delivered its final verdicts, amidst the race for European qualification, the relegation battle, and scenes of chaos in several stadiums. Lille, despite being defeated by Auxerre, secured their place in the Champions League. Lyon, humiliated at home by Lens, finished fourth and will have to contest the Champions League playoffs. Nice, unable to beat Metz at the Allianz Riviera, finished sixteenth and will face Saint-Étienne in the Ligue 1/Ligue 2 playoff.

Lille falls, but remains standing

Lille lost the match they couldn't afford to lose, but they salvaged what mattered most. Beaten 2-0 at home by Auxerre, Lille endured a tense evening. The Dogues knew that a slip-up could open the door for Lyon or Rennes in the race for third place. Ultimately, that didn't happen, thanks in particular to Lyon's defeat against Lens.

Auxerre struck at the perfect moment. Lassine Sinayoko opened the scoring for AJA before sealing the Burgundy side's victory, giving his team a crucial win in their fight against relegation. For Lille, this defeat doesn't change the essentials: with 61 points, the northern club finishes third and will join PSG and Lens in the Champions League.

Lyon collapses and will have to go through the playoffs for the Champions League.

Lyon still had a chance to pip Lille at the post. But OL let it slip away in a big way. Thrashed 4-0 by Lens at the Groupama Stadium, Lyon missed their opportunity to reach the podium. Wesley Saïd silenced the Lyon crowd with a brace, before Florian Sotoca and then Florian Thauvin added insult to injury.

This heavy defeat leaves Lyon in fourth place with 60 points. They will therefore play in the Champions League playoffs, a longer and more uncertain path to the league stage. Lens, already guaranteed second place, concluded their season in style and confirmed their return to the top flight.

Auxerre and Le Havre breathe a sigh of relief, Nice collapses

At the bottom of the table, Auxerre pulled off a perfect victory in Lille. AJA, fighting for their survival in the top flight, won 2-0 and finished fifteenth with 34 points. This win avoids the relegation playoff and extends their stay in Ligue 1.

Le Havre also secured their survival with a 2-0 victory away to Lorient. HAC finished fourteenth with 35 points, avoiding a prolonged relegation battle. The relief is immense for the Normandy side, who got the job done at the crucial moment.

Nice, on the other hand, failed to do their part. Against Metz, bottom of the table and already relegated, the Gym could only manage a 0-0 draw. This result leaves the Eagles in sixteenth place, with 32 points, and sends them to the relegation playoff against Saint-Étienne. Nice's season will therefore hinge on a high-stakes two-legged tie against Les Verts, the Ligue 2 playoff winners.

Nantes-Toulouse match stopped, Beaujoire stadium invaded

The evening descended into chaos in Nantes. Already relegated, FC Nantes couldn't even finish their last match of the season against Toulouse. The game was interrupted and then definitively abandoned at 0-0 after flares were thrown and a pitch invasion by Nantes supporters at the Beaujoire stadium.

The players were sent back to the locker room while police intervened to secure the pitch. This nightmarish end to the season also marked the painful farewell of Vahid Halilhodzic, deeply affected by the scenes witnessed in the Nantes stadium.

Tensions also arose in Nice after the final whistle.

In Nice, frustration also boiled over after the draw against Metz. The 0-0 result, which meant a relegation playoff against Saint-Étienne, sparked a tense end to the evening at the Allianz Riviera. A pitch invasion was also reported at the final whistle, amidst a climate of anger and dejection surrounding the Gym (Nice's nickname).

From a sporting perspective, Nice can no longer afford any mistakes. The Côte d'Azur club will now be fighting for survival against Saint-Étienne, in a duel that already promises to be a heated affair.

Strasbourg-Monaco, the crazy match. OM in the Europa League

Elsewhere, the evening offered a complete spectacle. Strasbourg won a completely crazy match against Monaco, 5-4, after trailing 4-1. Marseille beat Rennes 3-1 at the Vélodrome, an important result that secures Marseille a place in the Europa League. Brest and Angers drew 1-1. In the Parisian derby, Paris FC recorded a prestigious victory against PSG, already assured of the title, by a score of 2-1, thanks to a brace from Alimani Gory late in the game.
