Ligue 1: Rainbow colours will no longer appear on players' jerseys during the day against homophobia

During the next matchday dedicated to the fight against homophobia, Ligue 1 players will no longer wear jerseys featuring rainbow colors. This symbol of the LGBTQIA+ movement had been present in recent seasons as part of an awareness campaign organized by the Professional Football League.

A modification of the device

Since 2021, the LFP has organized an annual day dedicated to the fight against homophobia in football. On this occasion, players' jerseys displayed a badge or number decorated in rainbow colors, the symbol of the LGBTQIA+ movement.

But for the next edition, this system will change. According to several sources close to the organization, the LFP has decided to no longer display the rainbow colors directly on the players' jerseys.

The league wishes to prioritize other forms of awareness-raising, such as messages broadcast in stadiums, educational actions or communication campaigns.

Controversies in previous years

The presence of the rainbow symbol on the jerseys had sparked several controversies in previous seasons. Some players had refused to participate in matches or had chosen to cover the logo on their jerseys for personal or religious reasons.

These refusals had led to disciplinary sanctions and reignited the debate on how to promote the fight against discrimination in football.

Faced with these repeated tensions, the LFP seems to want to adapt its approach in order to avoid further controversy while maintaining its commitment against homophobia.

The fight against homophobia continues

Removing the symbol from the jerseys does not mean the campaign is over. The League assures that the dedicated day will remain an important awareness-raising event in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 stadiums.

Clubs, players and broadcasters should continue to participate in initiatives aimed at reminding everyone that homophobia has no place in football.
