Ligue 1: Lens secures Champions League qualification, Nantes relegated to Ligue 2

Last night, RC Lens secured their qualification for the next Champions League by beating FC Nantes at Bollaert, with a score of 1-0, during the 33rd day of Ligue 1. The hero of the evening is Mezian Mesloub, 16 years and six months old, brought on at the end of the match by Pierre Sage.

In his first professional appearance, the young Lens striker scored almost immediately after coming on as a substitute. In the 79th minute, he capitalized on a poorly cleared ball in the Nantes penalty area, beating Anthony Lopes with a low shot. First touch, first goal: Lens secured their return to the most prestigious European competition.

A European night for Lens

This victory allows Lens to mathematically secure their place in the Champions League.

In front of their home crowd, Lens dominated for much of the game but failed to capitalize. The Sang et Or (Blood and Gold) pressed forward, camped in Nantes' half, and created numerous chances, but they were repeatedly thwarted by Anthony Lopes or lacked precision in the final pass or shot. Two Lens goals were also disallowed, keeping the tension high until the final fifteen minutes.

Mesloub's introduction finally unlocked a match that looked set to remain frustrating for Lens. His goal transformed the evening into a celebration at Bollaert.

Nantes still had a chance, but it slipped away.

For Nantes, the equation was simple: they had to win to keep their hopes alive of a playoff spot and avoid direct relegation. The Canaries failed to achieve this.

FC Nantes did have chances to turn the game around. Johann Lepenant notably tested Robin Risser in the second half. Then Mathis Abline had a golden opportunity on the counter-attack, but his shot struck the post when Ignatius Ganago looked available in the center. This missed opportunity proved very costly.

A few minutes later, Mesloub scored for Lens and definitively condemned Nantes.

The relegation of a historic club

With this defeat, Nantes is officially relegated to Ligue 2, 13 years after its return to the top flight. The club can no longer catch its direct rivals with only one matchday remaining. FC Nantes, a historic club in French football, will have to rebuild after a season marked by inconsistency, a lack of efficiency, and an inability to win crucial matches.

The fall is a heavy one, symbolically and economically. It opens a period of uncertainty for the squad, the staff and the management…
