In a one-sided northern derby, Lille thrashed Lens 3-0 on Saturday night at the Decathlon Arena – Stade Pierre-Mauroy, in the 28th round of Ligue 1. Les Dogues (Lille's nickname) made the difference thanks to Hakon Haraldsson just before halftime, then Félix Correia and Matias Fernandez-Pardo after the break. For Lens, this heavy defeat comes at the worst possible time, following PSG's victory against Toulouse the day before, and seriously complicates their race for the top spot.
A derby that was tense for a long time, then completely dominated by Lille
The atmosphere was initially electric, sometimes excessively so. The match was disjointed in the first half, with several interruptions due to flares and a particularly tense atmosphere in the stands. Despite this oppressive context, Lille maintained control of the game, imposing a greater pace and intensity than a quickly stifled RC Lens side.
On the pitch, Bruno Genesio's men quickly showed they were better prepared for this match. Lille dominated the first half, creating the best chances against a vigilant Robin Risser, notably against Haraldsson and Fernandez-Pardo. Lens only had one real opportunity before the break, following a recovery by Odsonne Édouard, but the Lens striker failed to turn the game around.
Haraldsson opens the breach, Correia and Fernandez-Pardo finish the job
The turning point came just before halftime. In the 44th minute, Matias Fernandez-Pardo made some excellent work down the left flank before setting up Hakon Haraldsson, who finished at the far post, sending the Pierre-Mauroy stadium into raptures. This goal rewarded Lille's clear superiority and dealt a heavy blow to a Lens side already struggling physically and in duels.
Lens undoubtedly hoped to come out with renewed purpose after the break, but Lille immediately stepped up the pace. In the 49th minute, Félix Correia capitalized on a misplaced back pass from Matthieu Udol, rounded Robin Risser, and doubled the lead. Nine minutes later, Matias Fernandez-Pardo was also rewarded for his outstanding performance, converting the penalty to make it 3-0, awarded after a handball by Ismaelo Ganiou. In 14 minutes, the derby was effectively over.
Lens unrecognizable, Lille ruthless
The most striking aspect of this match was undoubtedly Lens' impotence. Pierre Sage's men never seemed capable of regaining control, or even mounting a genuine comeback. Lens only managed five shots and only one was on target. Even the substitutions made after halftime failed to correct a performance that was too disorganized, too passive, and far below the level the club has shown since the start of the season.
Conversely, Lille delivered a complete performance. Fernandez-Pardo was the star of the evening with an assist, a goal, and a constant influence between the lines. Haraldsson once again rose to the occasion in the big match, while Correia embodied Lille's clinical finishing. At the back, Les Dogues also controlled the few dangerous situations they faced, with their goalkeeper ultimately facing very few challenges.
A result that changes the top of the table
This 3-0 victory has significant consequences for the standings. Lens, second before kickoff, remains stuck on 59 points and sees PSG pull further ahead after their win against Toulouse the previous day. Paris now has a four-point lead over Lens, but also a game in hand against Nantes. A win in that match could therefore widen the gap to seven points, making Lens's task in the final stretch impossible.
For its part, Lille has secured a fourth consecutive victory in Ligue 1, climbed to 50 points and temporarily moved into the top three, in the midst of the race for Europe and the Champions League.
