With their 1-0 victory over Brest at the Parc des Princes, PSG have virtually secured the French league title. In the race for a top-three finish, Lille won 1-0 at Monaco and benefited from Lyon's 2-1 defeat at Toulouse. At the bottom of the table, Nice lost 2-1 at Auxerre and have dropped into the relegation playoff spot.
Paris did the bare minimum, but Paris took the decisive step
PSG defeated Brest 1-0 on Sunday evening in the 33rd round of Ligue 1. After being held at bay for much of the match, the league leaders finally broke the deadlock late in the game through Désiré Doué, who scored the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute. This victory brings Paris closer to another French league title.
Lens had kept the title hopes alive on Friday by beating Nantes (1-0), but PSG responded with a victory. Paris maintains a six-point lead and a goal difference of +15 over Lens, ahead of their trip to face the Sang et Or (Blood and Gold), where a draw will be enough to clinch the title. Even in the event of a defeat, the Parisian club will have one last chance to seal the deal on matchday 34.
Lille takes advantage of Lyon's slip-up
Lille pulled off the other big win of the evening, defeating Monaco 1-0. LOSC scored thanks to an own goal by Denis Zakaria in the 72nd minute and reclaimed third place from Lyon.
Meanwhile, Lyon lost to Toulouse (2-1). This result cost OL a place on the podium, as they now fall behind Lille before the final matchday. Rennes also remains in contention after their victory against Paris FC (2-1), achieved after trailing.
Nice overturned, Nice in danger
Nice opened the scoring in Auxerre, but ultimately lost 2-1. Auxerre turned the game around and overtook Nice, who dropped to 16th place. With one matchday remaining, Nice now occupies the relegation playoff spot.
So, staying up will be a high-pressure battle for Nice.
Marseille, Lorient and Rennes also win
Marseille secured a 1-0 victory in Le Havre, an important result in their European campaign. Lorient recorded the biggest win of the evening, thrashing Metz 4-0. Angers and Strasbourg played to a 1-1 draw.
Matchday 33 delivered a decisive outcome on three fronts: PSG are on the verge of the title after PSG-Brest (1-0), Lille have regained the lead over Lyon after Monaco-Lille (0-1) and Toulouse-Lyon (2-1), while Nice have plummeted after Auxerre-Nice (2-1). The other results – Lens-Nantes (1-0), Rennes-Paris FC (2-1), Angers-Strasbourg (1-1), Le Havre-Marseille (0-1), and Metz-Lorient (0-4) – completed a pivotal evening before the final matchday.
