Unsurprisingly, the mediator of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee has issued an unfavorable opinion on the Bordeaux club's request and recommends upholding the DNCG's decision excluding Girondins from the national championships . This decision now places the six-time French champions in a particularly uncertain future, with the threat of liquidation looming.
The CNOSF rejects the arguments of the Girondins
The Girondins had appealed to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) hoping to be reinstated at the national level after their exclusion, initially pronounced on June 30th by the Federal Club Control Commission and the DNCG (National Directorate of Management Control), and subsequently upheld on appeal on July 15th . A conciliation hearing was held on August 5th. The Bordeaux delegation hoped to convince the conciliator by highlighting the significant changes in the club's financial and capital structure since its last appearance before the DNCG. This proved insufficient. In his opinion, issued on Friday, August 14th, the conciliator recommended maintaining the Girondins' exclusion from the national championships. Bordeaux will therefore not obtain the hoped-for reinstatement to National 1, the new name for National 2 starting this season.
Gérard Lopez sold his shares for one euro
The club had, however, submitted a significantly revised proposal. On July 31st, Gérard Lopez sold his shares to Sparta Capital for a symbolic one euro. The businessman also waived his debts and the clause allowing for a return to better financial circumstances. The British fund raised €10,6 million to finance the 2026-2027 season, settle outstanding debts from the previous year, and meet the deadlines stipulated in the restructuring plan. Several investors participated in the financing, including James Bord, head of the Park Bench fund, entrepreneur Felix Roemer, American Evan Sofer, and Jeremy Green, founder and portfolio manager of Redmile Group. These new elements formed the core of Bordeaux's argument before the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF). Ultimately, they did not secure a favorable opinion.
Bordeaux finds itself in Regional 1
The immediate sporting consequence: Bordeaux will remain, for the time being, in Group B of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional 1 league. Their first league match is scheduled for Saturday, August 29th, away to Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, located less than 10 kilometers from their training center in Le Haillan. This is a considerable fall for a club that was still playing in Ligue 1 in 2021-2022 and boasts six French league titles. Following their administrative relegation and the loss of their professional status in 2024, Bordeaux played in National 2 for two seasons.
The sale to Sparta Capital is directly threatened
But the consequences of the decision extend far beyond the pitch. The takeover bid led by Sparta Capital was tied to the Girondins' return to a national league. The club's failure to be reinstated therefore directly threatens the completion of this deal. If the conditions stipulated for the sale can no longer be met, the financial arrangement designed to ensure the club's continued operation could become invalid. This situation would jeopardize the financial resources necessary for the club to pursue its recovery plan and operate normally during the season.
Judicial liquidation is becoming a real threat.
This is now the main danger for Bordeaux. Denied reinstatement in the national championships and facing uncertainty surrounding the takeover by Sparta Capital, the Girondins could find themselves unable to continue operating under the planned conditions. Liquidation would constitute another dramatic step in the Bordeaux club's decline. It could lead to the collapse of the current structure and raise questions about the club's sporting future, its employees, its players, and its youth academy.
