Olympique de Marseille suffered their third consecutive defeat in Ligue 1. After losses to Monaco (2-0) and Paris FC (2-3), OM fell to Stade Rennais (1-0) on Friday in Matchday 4. Adrien Thomasson scored the only goal of the game in the second half.
After four matchdays, Marseille has only three points out of a possible twelve, with one win and three losses. This is a particularly poor run of form ahead of two matches in quick succession: an away game against Besiktas in the Europa League, followed by a home game against PSG at the Vélodrome.
Marseille pushes forward but can't find the weakness
Marseille started the match well and quickly sought to impose their rhythm. They pressed high and tried to prevent Rennes from building clean attacks.
Rennes had their first chance through Issa Soumaré, but his cross found no one. Marseille responded, notably using the left flank with Igor Paixão. The striker found Amine Gouiri in the center, but OM couldn't convert.
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg also tries his luck. His shot ends up in the side netting.
Rennes looked dangerous before the break, but Jeffrey de Lange was equal to the task. After 45 minutes, no goals had been scored.
Thomasson punishes Marseille
Marseille went on the attack at the start of the second half. Paixão and Emerson combined on the left flank, but the Rennes defense intervened. In the 52nd minute, Rennes struck. Adrien Thomasson opened the scoring with a side-footed finish, giving the Bretons the lead.
Marseille immediately tried to react. Højbjerg took his chance a few minutes later, without managing to sufficiently trouble the Rennes goalkeeper.
Marseille are now chasing the game. Bruno Genesio makes several changes and strengthens his attacking options. Marseille push forward in the final minutes, but Rennes hold firm.
The final whistle confirms Marseille's latest disappointment: Rennes wins 1-0.
One win followed by three defeats for OM
The start of the season had been promising. Marseille had launched their campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory. But since that first matchday, OM haven't earned a single point.
Marseille first lost 2-0 in Monaco. A week later, the club from the south of France suffered another setback at the Vélodrome, losing 3-2 to Paris FC . The trip to Rennes was supposed to allow OM to end this losing streak. It ultimately resulted in a third consecutive defeat.
The record: one win, three losses and only three points after four Ligue 1 matchdays.
Besiktas then PSG, the schedule is getting even tougher
Marseille now has virtually no respite. First, OM must travel to Turkey to face Besiktas in the Europa League. A few days later, the Marseillais will return to the Vélodrome to host Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. With more disappointments likely to follow…
