Didier Deschamps congratulated PSG on Sunday morning after their latest Champions League title. The French national team coach summed up the significance of PSG's victory in one sentence: “This is another victory for French football.”
PSG won their second consecutive Champions League title on Saturday, May 30, 2026 in Budapest, beating Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Paris prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, a year after their first European triumph against Inter Milan.
The coach also congratulated the French internationals from the Parisian club, who participated in this European final before joining the French national team. Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, and Ousmane Dembélé were among the PSG players involved in the final, before their expected arrival at Clairefontaine.
A historic double for PSG
Paris has entered a rare category. After their 2025 title, the capital club retained the Champions League in 2026. This is a first for a French club. The final, however, started poorly for PSG, who fell behind in the 6th minute to a goal from Kai Havertz, before Ousmane Dembélé equalized from the penalty spot in the 65th minute.
The match was decided by penalties. Gonçalo Ramos, Désiré Doué, Achraf Hakimi, and Lucas Beraldo scored for Paris. Arsenal missed two attempts, including Gabriel's last, handing PSG their second consecutive European title.
The French national team is expected to perform well after Europe.
This victory comes as France prepares for the 2026 World Cup. Les Bleus began their training camp at Clairefontaine on Friday, with 18 of the 26 players called up already present. The Champions League finalists, including Paris Saint-Germain and William Saliba of Arsenal, benefit from a staggered schedule.
