In China, the icy city of Harbin transforms into an ice kingdom every winter.

Every January, an unusual and magical spectacle takes place in the city of Harbinin northeastern China. Despite polar temperatures and a natural abundance of ice, sculptors from all over the country and sometimes from abroad converge on this city near the Russian border to participate in the famous Ice and Snow Festival.

For several weeks, part of the city is transformed into a vast winter wonderland where immense ice sculptures light up from within, bathed in vibrant colors. Translucent towers, obelisks, palaces, and staircases give the site the feel of a fairytale setting, attracting families and visitors from sometimes very distant regions.

The works, carved with remarkable precision, are entered into competitions that reward the creativity and technical mastery of the artists. In the evening, when the sculptures are ablaze with light, the landscape becomes almost surreal, enhancing the magical atmosphere of the festival.

The event, which usually lasts until mid-February, has become one of China's most iconic winter gatherings. The most daring can even take the experience further by swimming in icy waters, further proof that in Harbin, winter is not just endured, but celebrated.
