A gang-related settling of scores turns tragic in the Lyon metropolitan area.

A violent brawl between rival gangs left one person dead and another seriously injured on Saturday night in Chassieu, near Lyon. The clashes took place in a supermarket parking lot where several young people had gathered to fight, according to initial findings of the investigation.

During the confrontation, a man in his twenties was fatally struck by a car as several participants attempted to flee the scene. A young woman was also hit and seriously injured. Suffering from multiple injuries, she was transported to the hospital in critical condition Sunday morning.

Three suspects were quickly apprehended.

Police arrested three people minutes after the incident, near the scene of the brawl. Investigators are now trying to determine the exact role of each individual involved, as well as the precise circumstances that led to the incident.

The public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to shed light on this settling of scores, which is part of a pattern of recurring violence between rival groups in the Lyon metropolitan area. The investigation will notably seek to determine whether the vehicle that struck the victims was used intentionally during the confrontation.
