A man in his seventies died Wednesday morning in a cell at the police station in Paris's 20th arrondissement. The 78-year-old was in police custody when his body was discovered. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear. The internal affairs division of the National Police, the Inspectorate General of the National Police, was immediately notified to conduct the necessary investigation.
The IGPN opens an investigation
This death comes at a time when every death occurring in a situation of deprivation of liberty receives particular attention from the authorities. The IGPN (General Inspectorate of the National Police) will have to determine the conditions under which the man in his seventies was held in custody and precisely reconstruct the events of the hours preceding his death. Investigators will notably examine the surveillance logs and interview the staff present at the police station.
An autopsy is planned.
At this stage, no hypothesis is being favored regarding the cause of death. An autopsy is expected to be performed in the coming days to determine the medical reasons that led to the death of the man in his seventies. The Paris prosecutor's office is also closely monitoring the case, in accordance with standard procedures for deaths in police custody.
