A garbage collector was seriously injured after a collision with a drunk and unlicensed driver.

A waste collection worker was seriously injured Saturday morning in Rivesaltes, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, after a driver crashed violently into the back of a garbage truck. The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. while the collection vehicle was making its rounds. The victim, a 57-year-old man, suffered leg injuries and was rushed to the hospital in Perpignan in critical condition.

The collision required a significant emergency response, with around twenty firefighters and paramedics responding to the scene. The other people present—two passengers in the car and two officers in the truck—escaped the accident unharmed.

A driver committing an offense was taken into custody.

The 20-year-old driver was hospitalized, but his condition is not considered serious. Initial findings indicate he was driving under the influence of alcohol and without a license. Already known to police for drug-related offenses, he was arrested and taken into custody.

Nitrous oxide canisters were also found near the car, although it has not yet been established whether he had consumed any before the accident. A preliminary investigation has been opened for aggravated injury and driving under the influence of alcohol without a license in order to determine the precise circumstances of the incident.
