A 13-year-old boy died Tuesday morning in a violent fire in an apartment building in the Saint-Denis-Pierrefitte district of Seine-Saint-Denis. The tragedy occurred on the fifth floor of the building and required a significant emergency response. Despite the firefighters' rapid intervention, the young student could not be saved. His mother and another child in the family were treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital. The father, deeply traumatized by the events, also received medical and psychological support.
The mayor of Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko, arrived on the scene in the early hours of the morning. Describing the situation as "dramatic," he confirmed the young boy's death and emphasized the extent of the fire's human impact. Several families had to be urgently evacuated, and a psychological support unit was to be set up to assist residents and the victims' families as they grappled with this tragedy.
Significant rescue resources mobilized
Alerted shortly before 7 a.m., the Paris Fire Brigade launched a large-scale operation. Approximately twenty fire engines and one hundred firefighters were deployed to control the blaze and evacuate residents. According to the Paris Fire Brigade, the fire started in an apartment before spreading to a neighboring apartment on the top floor of the building.
The rescue operation resulted in numerous rescues on the upper floors of the building. Several residents were evacuated as smoke rapidly filled the common areas. After several hours of work, firefighters finally managed to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further throughout the residence.
A building completely evacuated
The material damage appears particularly extensive. Several apartments were destroyed or severely damaged by the flames and smoke. As a safety precaution, the entire building was evacuated, forcing local authorities to set up temporary accommodation for the affected families.
The municipality is now working with social services and the housing authority to ensure residents are rehoused as quickly as possible. Emergency solutions must be offered to those who cannot return to their homes immediately due to fire damage.
The origin of the fire remains unknown
At this stage, the exact circumstances of the fire remain undetermined. According to initial information gathered at the scene, the fire appears to have started in one apartment before spreading to a neighboring one. An investigation will now be conducted to establish the cause of the blaze and determine any potential liability.
The mayor of Saint-Denis also indicated his desire for a swift meeting with the building's landlord to provide residents with all necessary guarantees. According to him, several similar incidents have already occurred in this housing complex in the past.
