Eight people were injured, two seriously, at an illegal car tuning meet held in Reims on Friday night. According to authorities, a car struck several participants shortly before midnight while between 200 and 300 people were gathered around approximately 100 vehicles.
The driver involved in the accident has been apprehended. The exact circumstances of the collision are still under investigation, but emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims.
Authorities denounce dangerous gatherings
The prefect of the Marne, Romain Royet, condemned the "irresponsible" behavior and reminded everyone that these clandestine events represented a major danger for both participants and spectators.
Car tuning gatherings regularly bring together enthusiasts of modified vehicles who come to compare their cars or participate in demonstrations that sometimes resemble urban rodeos. Authorities regularly report traffic violations and significant risks associated with these undeclared events.
Faced with the increasing number of these gatherings, a bill currently being examined in the Senate plans to strengthen the repression of motorized rodeos, notably with the creation of a fixed fine of 800 euros in order to punish participants more quickly.
