On Monday evening in Lyon, the return of sports ended with sirens. Shortly after 21 p.m., a man was attacked with a knife in the 2nd arrondissement, as he arrived at his home, in the area between Perrache station and Place Bellecour, a usually lively area where people think more about terraces than knives.
According to a police source, the victim was struck several times in the chest and buttocks. Emergency services responded quickly, and the man was transported to Edouard-Herriot Hospital. His condition was not considered life-threatening Monday evening, a detail that does not diminish the brutality of the attack.
A lightning attack, an investigation launched
A lightning attack, an investigation launched. The crux of the matter remains: the why. Unprovoked attack, attempted robbery, settling of scores… At this stage, investigators are not favoring any particular lead. The Rhône national police have opened an investigation for "attempted homicide," a serious charge that underscores the gravity of the act, even when the victim survives.
The perpetrator has not been apprehended and is the subject of a manhunt. In this central district, where passersby cross paths without seeing each other, the investigation will inevitably rely on witness statements and available images from around busy thoroughfares, from building entrances to public transport hubs, where everything can change in a matter of seconds.
For now, the case is progressing at the pace of the findings and interviews, while the area absorbs the shock. A man returns home, is stabbed, then nothing but a silhouette disappears: this impression of an attack that came out of nowhere leaves a trace, and Lyon now waits for the investigation to put a name, a motive, a face to this escape.
