A 50-year-old blind man died Friday morning after falling onto the tracks of the Lyon metro. The tragedy occurred late in the morning at the Masséna station, located in the 6th arrondissement, on line A of the network. According to the operator Sytral Mobilités, the victim apparently failed to recognize the safety line marked by the tactile paving, the textured strips installed along the platform edge to alert visually impaired people.
More than two hours of traffic disruption
Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene but could only confirm the death. The accident caused a complete shutdown of service on line A for more than two hours while the investigation and safety measures were carried out. Thousands of passengers were forced to find alternative routes during this time.
This tragedy reignites questions about the safety of disabled people on public transport. Tactile paving, mandatory for several years now, is the primary means of preventing accidental falls on the tracks. This fatal accident highlights the vulnerability of visually impaired users in underground public spaces where orientation remains difficult despite accessibility improvements.
