Loire: A suspect jailed after videos suggest a "violent action"

On Saturday in Saint-Étienne, police arrested a 35-year-old man recognized during a routine check over the Easter weekend. The individual, an Algerian national residing illegally in France, has now been formally charged and placed in pretrial detention, according to a judicial source. In a country where the terrorist threat remains a constant presence, the case has moved quickly, and the anti-terrorism apparatus has been mobilized immediately.

Two videos, an alert, and a race against time

Two videos, released in quick succession on social media, are central to the case, the starting point of the investigation opened on April 3 by the National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT). In the videos, the suspect reportedly expresses his wish to "die a martyr" and is seen firing a firearm into the air in the street, according to information gathered by the PNAT. During the night of Friday to Saturday, orders were given to locate him quickly, amid heightened vigilance around religious celebrations, even though the investigation has not yet confirmed that a place of worship was targeted.

On Wednesday, after 96 hours in police custody, he was brought before an anti-terrorism investigating judge, and a judicial inquiry was opened, notably for "participation in a terrorist criminal conspiracy with a view to preparing one or more crimes against persons" and for "possession of category B weapons, weapon parts, and ammunition in connection with a terrorist enterprise." The investigations have been entrusted to the DGSI (General Directorate for Internal Security) and the DNPJ (National Directorate of the Judicial Police), while four other people taken into custody have been released without charges at this stage. It now remains to be seen what lay behind these images, whether a morbid provocation or a structured plan, and to see what the investigation will actually uncover in the coming weeks.
