Northern Italy was hit hard by severe weather on April 17, causing flooding and road closures. Three people lost their lives, including a 64-year-old man and his 33-year-old son, who were found in Vicenza, Veneto, after their car was swept away. Both victims had volunteered for the rescue operation. A man in his nineties was also found dead in his flooded home in Piedmont.
Dozens of families evacuated and roads cut
The severe weather, which also caused landslides and snowfall at higher altitudes, cut off several roads, forcing dozens of people to be evacuated, some with their pets. The Valle d'Aosta region was particularly hard hit, with around 5 families without power.
The Carabinieri, based on CCTV footage, were able to locate the victims, facilitating the search. The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, expressed his condolences to the victims' families, describing the tragedy as unimaginable.
