This Monday morning, the awakening had a taste of ashes in Décines-Charpieu, east of Lyon. Around 7:30 a.m., a fire broke out in a seven-story building. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the death toll remains unchanged: three people lost their lives, announced the prefect of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and the Rhône department.
In the stairwells, the hallways, and the apartments, the smoke did its insidious work. Around fifty residents were evacuated. Fourteen people, exposed to the smoke, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Thirty-eight others were taken to a gymnasium opened by the municipality, giving them time to collect themselves, make a phone call, and understand what had just happened. On site, operations were still underway on Monday to secure the building.
The possibility of a criminal act enters the case.
This isn't just a disaster; it's a legal case that's gaining momentum. According to a police source quoted by Radio France, the possibility of arson is being investigated. The Lyon public prosecutor's office has opened an inquiry for "damage caused by dangerous means resulting in death," "voluntary homicide by an organized group," and "participation in a criminal conspiracy to commit a crime by an organized group." Forensic science, the criminal investigation department, the Lyon forensic institute, and fire experts from the national forensic science service: everyone is being called to testify, at least regarding the initial findings.
On the ground, the tension is also evident in the deployment. Riot police reinforcements have been mobilized to bolster security in the neighborhood, the prefect indicated, while Sentinelle patrols secure the perimeter. The Red Cross and an emergency medical-psychological support unit have been called in. The Lyon metropolitan area, the city, and the housing authority are working together to support residents, particularly with rehousing. The administrative process is moving forward, but it doesn't overshadow the essential issues: displaced families, traumatized neighbors, and lives brought to a sudden halt.
One significant detail looms large in the background: several arson attacks had been reported in the area in recent weeks, according to the same police source. The prosecutor's office maintains that no hypothesis is being ruled out at this stage. The question now is what caused the blaze, and, more importantly, whether someone was behind the flames.
