Woman found dead in Besançon: her partner in custody, investigation begins

On Tuesday, a 36-year-old woman was found dead at her home in Besançon. Her 50-year-old partner, along with his daughter, called emergency services and was taken into custody as part of the investigation, according to the prosecutor's office. He is described as the last person to have seen the victim alive and maintains his innocence in the death.

Initial findings suggest an "asphyxiation syndrome," with two hypotheses under consideration: "either through medication or the intervention of a third party," stated the Besançon prosecutor's office. The investigation has been opened for "murder of a spouse," a charge that allows investigators to act quickly, conducting interviews, analyzing phone records, and checking with neighbors, while also allowing for the forensic results, which, in this type of case, can tip the balance one way or the other.

An autopsy is expected to determine the cause of asphyxiation.

One factor already raises suspicion: the man had a prior conviction for domestic violence against the victim. He was not subject to a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting her. The prosecutor's office nevertheless emphasizes that, at this stage, "very little evidence" points "to femicide," noting the absence of signs of a struggle in the apartment, the lack of signs of blows or blood, apart from a small mark on the neck deemed insignificant.

The autopsy, scheduled for Thursday morning, along with toxicological analyses, must now establish the exact cause of asphyxiation and clarify the circumstances of death. The couple, of Kosovar and Albanian origin, have several children. In the meantime, the case remains contingent on these expert analyses, which often bring the truth to a concrete level, far removed from assumptions and immediate reactions, and the subsequent legal proceedings will depend on what the body reveals.
