Eure: A woman killed by her ex-partner four years after a first attempted murder

A 30-year-old woman, a mother of two, was killed in Houlbec-Cocherel (Eure), in what is being treated as another femicide. The main suspect, her 32-year-old former partner, is believed to have stabbed her multiple times before committing suicide a few hours later by jumping off a cliff at Château-Gaillard, in Les Andelys. Police discovered the victim's body Tuesday evening after being alerted by her father.

The public prosecutor in Évreux noted that the young woman had already been the victim of an attempted murder by the same man in 2022. At the time, she survived after managing to escape her apartment by jumping out of a window and taking refuge with a neighbor. Her partner then attempted suicide before being charged with attempted murder of his spouse and placed in pretrial detention.

A man declared criminally irresponsible

The investigation conducted after the 2022 events concluded that the suspect suffered from psychiatric disorders. In September 2023, the Rouen Court of Appeal declared him criminally irresponsible following his confession and ordered his hospitalization. He was subsequently transferred, in January 2024, to a healthcare facility in Mantes-la-Jolie to be closer to his family.

Investigators are now trying to determine the circumstances under which he left the psychiatric facility. According to initial statements, the victim and her former partner had resumed contact several months prior, despite a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting her. According to their relatives, they were even considering resuming a life together, at least partially. In 2024, 107 women were killed in France by their partner or ex-partner, according to data from the Interministerial Mission for the Protection of Women.
