Tragedy in Toulon – a mother and her three children perish after falling from the thirteenth floor

It was before 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20, that firefighters and paramedics were called to the Pontcarral housing complex in the Var region after bodies were discovered at the foot of building A. A mother and three of her children—two boys and a girl—had fallen from the thirteenth floor. Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the victims at the scene but were unsuccessful.

According to initial reports from police sources, the mother woke one of her children at dawn and asked him to jump with her and his younger siblings. The woman and two children died at the scene. The little girl, taken to the hospital in critical condition, died shortly afterward. The precise circumstances of the tragedy are the subject of an investigation opened by the Toulon public prosecutor's office.

A neighborhood already scarred by years of violence

The Pontcarral housing estate, designated a priority neighborhood for republican reconquest since 2019, bears the weight of a difficult past. Plagued by drug trafficking, vandalism, and settling of scores, this area of over a thousand residents has already been the target of several large-scale police operations. It is within this context of profound social fragility that this extremely brutal family tragedy occurred.

The human toll from this morning is exceptionally high. Four members of the same family lost their lives within minutes. The ongoing investigation will seek to establish precisely the circumstances surrounding the mother's actions and determine whether she was receiving any prior medical or social support. No other individuals are being sought at this stage.
