Belgium: Explosion targets synagogue in Liège, investigation launched

An explosion occurred overnight Sunday to Monday in front of a synagogue in Liège, eastern Belgium. According to police, the incident took place shortly before 4:00 a.m. in front of the building located on Rue Léon Frédéricq. No injuries were reported, but the explosion caused significant material damage, including shattered windows in neighboring buildings.

Law enforcement quickly established a security perimeter to conduct initial investigations. Federal police arrived at the scene, and the federal prosecutor's office, which handles cases related to terrorism and organized crime, opened an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.

The mayor denounces an anti-Semitic act

The mayor of Liège, Willy Demeyer, described the incident as an "anti-Semitic act" and denounced what he considers the importation into the city of tensions linked to international conflicts. Authorities believe the explosion may have been arson, although the exact circumstances remain to be established.

The targeted synagogue, built in 1899, also houses a museum dedicated to the history of Liège's Jewish community and displays several religious artifacts. Investigators are continuing their inquiries to identify the perpetrators and understand the motives behind this attack.
