A man suspected of stabbing a firefighter on Thursday in Fontan, in the Roya Valley (Alpes-Maritimes), was arrested and taken into custody, the Nice prosecutor's office announced on Sunday. Investigators will now continue questioning and inquiries to confirm his involvement in the attack.
According to the daily Nice-MatinThe arrest took place Saturday evening in Ventimiglia, Italy, before the suspect was handed over to French authorities. The man, originally from Sudan, is currently being questioned at the Menton gendarmerie's research brigade.
An attack with no apparent motive
The attack took place on Thursday at the Fontan fire station. A 47-year-old volunteer firefighter was seriously injured by a knife wound to the abdomen inflicted by a man who then fled.
The victim, whose life is not in danger, was airlifted to the hospital in Nice. According to initial findings of the investigation, the attack appears to have been carried out without any apparent motive.
On the social network X, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez welcomed the arrest of the suspect, thanking the Italian law enforcement for their cooperation and mentioning an "immense relief" after this arrest.
