A 24-year-old man died in Saint-Étienne on Saturday night after being stabbed by the owner of a vehicle he was apparently trying to steal. The Saint-Étienne prosecutor's office confirmed that an investigation has been opened, and the 25-year-old driver has been taken into custody.
The incident occurred around 22:30 p.m. in the Richelandière neighborhood. Alerted by witnesses who reported an individual near a parked car, the owner went to the scene and discovered a man inside his vehicle. An altercation then broke out, during which several stab wounds were inflicted.
An investigation has been opened into the fatal violence.
Seriously injured, the young man was treated by emergency services before succumbing to his injuries in hospital a few hours later. The car's owner was arrested shortly afterward and taken into custody as part of an investigation for "assault and battery with a weapon resulting in death."
Investigators are now trying to reconstruct the precise sequence of events and determine the exact circumstances of the owner's intervention. In particular, the police must establish whether he acted in self-defense or if the use of the knife was disproportionate to the situation.
