Exclusive report from our special correspondent in Oman, Jessica Pierné

Between sea, deserts, fjords and mountains, the Sultanate of Oman promises a complete change of scenery! That's what we went to check out. From the incense routes to those of black gold, the Sultanate of Oman is the most traditional destination in the Gulf. According to legend, the Sailor Sinbad is said to have lived in the north of the country around the 10th century. This legendary land of the Arabian Nights takes us on a journey through the red desert, hilltop villages and palm groves to experience the beauty of the great outdoors during a stay with the sweet scent of the Orient.

Muscat, the capital of the Sultanate of Oman
Situated between the sea and the mountains, the Omani capital is arguably the most beautiful city in the Persian Gulf. In old Muscat, or at the port of Muttrah, the architecture of the wooden houses with their ornate doors and balconies still bears witness to the sultanate's rich maritime past and its trade with Persia, India, and Zanzibar. Upon arriving, I enjoyed getting lost in the souk and walking along the corniche to admire the dowhs, traditional wooden boats anchored in the bay.

Preserved wildlife
You don't need to be an experienced diver to observe turtles up close. Ras Al Jinz Beach, located three hours south of Muscat, is classified as a nature reserve. It hosts the nesting of turtles every year. 30 turtles at the foot of the rocks. At nightfall, I went looking for them with a marine biologist, without lights so as not to frighten them. I was able to see three turtles in an hour.

The beauty of Salalah
Located in the far south of the Sultanate, 1000 kilometers from the Omani capital, Salalah is a superb seaside resort. People come to stay in the hotels bordering the Indian Ocean and discover the city, which is home to a Swahili coconut grove, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A magical place that invites contemplation.

Test the Dune Bashing experience
Dune bashing, which means 'crossing the dunes,' is a national sport in Oman. To reach the sand dunes where the Bedouins live, we set off from Muscat for a three-hour drive. Here, the desert represents 80% of the Sultanate. Once there, we gather momentum in a large 4X4. Once we reach the summit, we zigzag down the slope. A delight for travelers seeking thrills!

Recharge your batteries in the heart of the mountains
In the western foothills of the Hajar Mountains, there are natural pools of intense green where you can swim. Here again, a 4x4 is essential to traverse this spectacular mountain landscape. At night, you can observe the stars far from any light pollution and spend a few soothing hours in absolute silence.

The Royal Opera House Muscat
This opera house is the only one in the world to have an organ, a German one built by Philipp Klais. Sultan Qaboos Ben Said (who died in 2020) was a great lover of classical music and ordered its construction in 2007. Inside, the decor is worthy of "Arabian Nights," with Swarovski crystals encased in large copper lanterns from Turkey, white marble, and exotic Burmese wood. But the most impressive feature is undoubtedly the exceptional acoustics. The 550-seat hall is dedicated to family performances, chamber concerts, and world music.

Amouage perfumery, a worldwide reputation
Amouage is a luxury perfumery founded in 1983 in Muscat. Its fragrance is instantly recognizable and is also one of the most expensive in the world. Worn by Carla Bruni, this sweet, sandalwood-infused scent reveals captivating notes.

Omani women
The Sultanate of Oman is considered one of the safest countries in the world. Here, Omani women work and feel safe day and night. I met these two women (a mother and daughter) on the beach in Muscat. It was an opportunity to discuss the identity, values, and lifestyle of the inhabitants of this country at the crossroads of maritime routes between Asia, East Africa, and Europe.
