Tensions erupted in Venice on Friday during a protest against the presence of the Boardwalk, the mega-yacht belonging to Tilman Fertitta, the US ambassador to Italy. Several hundred people gathered in the lagoon city to denounce American policy in the Middle East and the arrival of the vessel, attempting to approach it despite a heavy security presence. Brief clashes broke out between some protesters and police deployed around the yacht.
The 117-meter-long Boardwalk, flying the Cayman Islands flag, arrived in Venice after calling at several Italian ports as part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence. The ship was escorted by Italian police patrol boats and jet skis for security.
A visit criticized by the Italian opposition
The yacht's presence has also drawn political criticism. Several opposition members of parliament have denounced the cost of the extensive security measures deployed for this diplomatic tour, arguing that these expenses are being borne by Italian taxpayers. They particularly object to the deployment of numerous police and coast guard units at each of the ship's ports of call.
The protest was organized by a local association, which denounced what it considers a display of power and luxury incompatible with the hardships faced by Venice's residents. The organizers compared the visit to the wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, held in the city last year, arguing that it is yet another example of the tensions between luxury tourism and the concerns of residents grappling with rising living and housing costs.
