A 67-year-old woman died after being violently attacked by a herd of cows in a grazing area in the Austrian Tyrol. Her 65-year-old husband was taken to a hospital in Innsbruck in serious condition after the attack, which occurred near Oberlienz in the Austrian Alps.

According to Austrian police, several dozen cattle belonging to an agricultural cooperative were gathered in the area where the couple was walking. The exact circumstances of the tragedy remain unclear, and an investigation has been launched to determine what triggered the charge of the herd.

Cattle attacks are on the rise in the Alps

This latest tragedy is reminiscent of several similar accidents that have occurred in Austria in recent years. In 2025, an 85-year-old hiker from Vienna died after being attacked by cows in the Austrian Alps, while his wife was injured.

Austrian authorities regularly warn tourists about the risks associated with livestock grazing in alpine pastures, particularly in the presence of dogs or calves. Following several fatal attacks since 2014, the government even issued official recommendations advising hikers to stay away from cattle and to unleash their dogs if they charge.
