Ukraine: The EU is determined to release €90 billion despite the Hungarian veto

Meeting in Brussels on Thursday, March 19, the heads of state and government of the European Union placed the war in Ukraine at the heart of their discussions. The main issue at this summit concerns the release of massive new financial support for Kyiv, estimated at 90 billion euros, in a context of persistent military pressure.

But this aid remains, for now, contingent on a political deadlock. Hungary, led by Viktor Orbán, opposes the proposed mechanism, preventing the adoption of a unanimous agreement. This refusal immediately sparked tensions among member states, with several capitals calling for a swift decision given the urgent situation on the ground.

European institutions have reaffirmed the need to maintain strong support for Ukraine. Since the beginning of the conflict, the European Union has already mobilized nearly €195 billion for Kyiv, confirming its central role in providing financial and logistical assistance to the country.

This summit highlights a dual reality: a widely shared political will to support Ukraine, but persistent divisions over the modalities of this commitment. In a context of reshaping security balances in Europe, these disagreements undermine the image of unity that Brussels seeks to project.

In the absence of an immediate agreement, negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days. Their outcome will be crucial for the European Union's ability to maintain sustained support for Ukraine and to exert influence in managing the conflict vis-à-vis Russia.
