The British government wants to give municipalities more power to control the opening of e-cigarette shops, gaming halls, and betting outlets. In England, any new vaping shop will need planning permission.
The legal definition of these businesses will also be strengthened to prevent some establishments from circumventing the rules by presenting themselves as convenience stores. New adult gaming venues, particularly those offering 24/7 access to slot machines, will also require local authorization.
Closures that could last up to a year
Across Great Britain, the government will abolish the rule that currently limits municipalities' ability to refuse the opening of betting shops. In England and Wales, businesses found guilty of selling illegal tobacco or e-cigarettes can be closed for up to twelve months.
These measures also target businesses suspected of money laundering, illegal employment, or selling prohibited goods. According to the National Crime Agency, at least one billion pounds of criminal activity is laundered each year through businesses located in British city centers.
