British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is to tour the various nations and regions of the United Kingdom to meet with residents struggling with the rising cost of living. Downing Street has announced a series of measures designed to ease their daily lives and provide them with some relief.
The head of government wants, in particular, to combat hidden prices and what he considers abusive business practices. He also wants to support businesses in city centers and gather public concerns in order to develop a ten-year economic plan.
Important measures expected in October
The main financial announcements are not expected until the budget is presented in October. Chancellor John Healey has warned that he will maintain strict fiscal discipline, which will limit the government's room for maneuver.
The opposition is already criticizing this tour. The Conservatives accuse the government of increasing taxes and constraints on businesses, while the Liberal Democrats are calling for a temporary reduction in VAT for the hotel and restaurant sector and a reform of business taxation.
The early release of prisoners remains controversial.
Andy Burnham will also have to address the criticism surrounding his early release program for prisoners in England and Wales. Two men convicted of killing police officer Andrew Harper could benefit from the program starting in 2027, despite protests from his family.
The government maintains it cannot further restrict the program without exacerbating prison overcrowding. The prison population has already reached 86,495 inmates, more than 97% of available capacity, and could exceed the number of places as early as November.
