More than 31,000 people have signed a petition calling on British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to launch a public inquiry into the media coverage of Jason Arday. The 41-year-old former professor of sociology of education at Cambridge University was found dead in London on Friday. Several British MPs also support the initiative, launched by the advocacy group Good Law Project.
Jason Arday resigned earlier this month from his positions at Cambridge University and Jesus College. Both institutions had launched investigations into allegations of plagiarism, as well as possible fabrications or exaggerations concerning his academic background. The academic denied these accusations and explained that his resignation did not constitute an admission of guilt.
Accusations of harassment and racism
The Good Law Project claims that Jason Arday's death was a consequence of the media harassment he endured. The organization also believes that the academic's skin color played a role in the violence of the attacks directed against him. These claims, however, remain those of the activist group, and the police have, at this stage, established no link between the public controversy and the death.
The accusations were made by Nathan Cofnas, a former Cambridge academic dismissed in 2024 who described himself as a "racial realist." They were subsequently widely reported by the British press and by commentators opposed to diversity policies. Police are currently treating Jason Arday's death as unexpected, but not suspicious, and are continuing their investigation to determine the cause. A vigil in his memory is to be held Monday evening in Trafalgar Square, London.
