Threat to strategic infrastructure: explosives discovered near a gas pipeline in Serbia

Explosives have been discovered near a major gas pipeline in Serbia, sparking serious concern among authorities and triggering a large-scale security operation in the north of the country. According to information relayed by several reliable sources, the discovery concerns an energy infrastructure linking Serbia to Hungary, essential for the region's gas supply.

According to Serbian authorities, two bags containing explosives and detonating devices were found a few hundred meters from the pipeline. President Aleksandar Vučić described the devices as having "devastating power," raising fears of a sabotage plot targeting a critical infrastructure.

The alert triggered an exceptional mobilization of security forces. Police, the army, and specialized units cordoned off several areas near the Hungarian border, with the support of helicopters, drones, and tracking dogs. Some towns were temporarily isolated while search and security operations were carried out.

The ongoing investigation aims to determine the origin of the explosives and the intentions behind their presence near the gas pipeline. Authorities are not ruling out an attempted attack against strategic infrastructure, in a context of heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding energy in Europe.

This facility is part of the network transporting Russian gas to Central Europe via the Balkans, notably through the TurkStream pipeline, considered vital for several countries in the region. Securing this infrastructure has become a strategic priority, as the risks of energy sabotage have increased since the start of the war in Ukraine and the associated international tensions.
