Two migrants from North Africa were rescued around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, about 20 kilometers southwest of Majorca. Their makeshift boat had been adrift for approximately two weeks as they attempted to reach the Balearic Islands.
Hospitalized for dehydration and malnutrition, the two men claim that 17 other passengers died during the crossing. Spanish authorities state that they currently have no evidence to corroborate their account beyond their testimonies.
Two bodies discovered off the coast of Cabrera
A helicopter was deployed to search the area. A few hours later, two bodies were recovered about 15 kilometers southwest of the uninhabited island of Cabrera. No formal link has yet been established between these victims and the passengers of the boat found near Mallorca.
The sea route linking North Africa to the Balearic Islands is becoming increasingly busy. Between January and July, 3,864 migrants arrived irregularly in the archipelago, 10% more than projected for 2025. Regional authorities are now calling for a specific system in Madrid, arguing that this increase is gradually transforming the Balearic Islands into a new gateway to Europe.
