Ukraine is working to restore electricity in the southeast after new Russian airstrikes

Ukrainian authorities were trying on Thursday to restore electricity supply to two regions in the southeast of the country after overnight Russian strikes caused a near-total blackout, forcing critical infrastructure to operate on backup sources.

According to the government in Kyiv, the attacks targeted critical energy facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, as Moscow intensifies its campaign against the Ukrainian energy system during the winter months. This latest wave of strikes comes as Ukraine faces increased diplomatic pressure from the United States to move toward a peace agreement.

The Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba It was reported that repairs were continuing to restore heating and water supplies to more than one million consumers in the Dnipropetrovsk industrial region. The Ministry of Energy stated that nearly 800,000 customers remained without power in the area on Thursday morning, while electricity had been restored in the neighboring Zaporizhzhia region.

The governor of Zaporizhzhia, Ivan FedorovHe stated that this was the first total power outage in the region in several years, while emphasizing the speed of the response from the services. "A difficult night for the region. But light always triumphs in the end," he wrote on Telegram.

The Ministry of Energy also reported outages affecting eight mines in the Dnipropetrovsk region, stating that workers had been safely evacuated. Local authorities indicated that fully restoring the water supply to the strategic city of Pavlohrad and surrounding areas could take up to a day.

These disruptions come as Ukraine faces a cold snap forecast for the coming days. The Prime Minister Julia Svyrydenko warned that the weather conditions could worsen the difficulties faced by electricity and heating networks, already weakened by repeated attacks. The Ministry of Energy added that the bad weather had already caused power outages in several localities across at least four regions of the country.
