Hamish Falconer, the new minister in charge of post-Brexit negotiations, announces he wants to give a "renewed impetus" to discussions with Brussels, while remaining within the limits set by the Labour Party.

The United Kingdom intends to move faster and further in its rapprochement with the European Union. This was stated by Hamish Falconer, the minister recently appointed by Andy Burnham to lead the post-Brexit negotiations, in his first public remarks since taking office.

Falconer indicated he wanted to give talks with Brussels a "renewed sense of pace," believing there was "room to be ambitious" within the red lines drawn by Labour. These lines preclude any reopening of discussions on the single market and the customs union.

The minister clarified that he intended to explore "the art of the possible" in this constrained space, without calling into question the fundamental commitments of the Burnham government on the European question.

His appointment itself attracted some attention: Falconer revealed that he received the call announcing his entry into the cabinet while he was on his honeymoon.
