Emmanuel Macron will travel to London on Wednesday to inaugurate the exhibition dedicated to the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum. The French president personally oversaw this historic loan, announced in the summer of 2025 despite concerns raised by several specialists regarding the fragility of the tapestry.
During his trip, the French president is also scheduled to meet with the new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, at Downing Street. A meeting with King Charles III is also planned, according to the Élysée Palace. This visit will thus combine cultural cooperation and diplomatic exchanges between France and the United Kingdom.
An exceptional loan for almost a year
Created in the 11th century, the tapestry recounts the conquest of England by William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The embroidery arrived in London on July 10th after a delicate transfer, closely monitored by the teams responsible for its conservation. No visible damage had been observed at that time.
The artwork will be on public display from September 10, 2026, to July 11, 2027, at Britain's main museum. This exceptionally long-term loan will allow the British public to discover a major artifact of their medieval history, while also strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
