Police will increase their presence in Brussels following several shootings attributed to drug trafficking. In recent days, armed individuals have opened fire repeatedly in the Belgian capital, injuring several people. A police station was also targeted during this latest outbreak of violence.
Following an emergency meeting of local and national authorities, the deployment of 40 additional police officers was announced. Personnel will also be redeployed to the hardest-hit neighborhoods, and mobile cameras will be installed to facilitate the identification and arrest of perpetrators.
The Minister of the Interior speaks of a "national emergency"
“We are in a state of national emergency,” declared Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin. He believes that the fight against organized crime must become an absolute priority for all services and levels of government in the country.
Belgium is one of the main entry points for drugs into Europe, particularly through the port of Antwerp. For several years, armed clashes have been increasing between rival networks seeking to control sales points. This escalation is fueling growing concern in Brussels, which also hosts the main institutions of the European Union.
